De zoektocht naar Rudolph W. Matus, gesneuveld tijdens de Slag om Overloon (okt.1944)

Soldaat Matus staat vermeld op de Tablets of the Missing op het Amerikaanse oorlogskerkhof te Margraten.
In de jaren na de oorlog zijn er in de omgeving van Overloon en dus in het gebied waar Matus en zijn collega’s gevochten hebben, stoffelijke overschotten gevonden. Hieronder een overzicht van de namen van de militairen die nog gevonden zijn. Bij Matus staat Missing in Action en is dus nog altijd vermist. Met de term ‘associated with the loss..’ bedoeld men dat deze mannen in hetzelfde gebied zijn gesneuveld als waar ook Rudolph Matus is gesneuveld/heeft gevochten.

Nine enlisted soldiers of the 48th Infantry Battalion went missing on 5 October 1944 during the fighting around Overloon. Seven of these nine were members of Company C, Pvt Matus’ unit. Of these seven, all but Pvt Matus were later discovered and identified (including Pvt Lester Golden and PFC George Renda who were identified in 1977). These six soldiers were all found relatively nearby, as they had been fighting together as a unit. Graves Registration units and the AGRC investigated the battlefield area in the 1940s. More recently, the historian of the 7th Armored Division Association, Wesley Johnston, has examined the circumstances of the AGRC’s recovery of remains in the area. It is probable that, as a participant in that day’s action, Pvt Matus had been killed somewhere near the other members of his unit. The other members were found at these location. The cluster of casualties incurred on 5 October 1944 from Company C of the 48th Infantry Battalion shows that there had been heavy fighting at the edge of the woods along Kamphoefweg, Overloon, near the intersection with Roosendaalsweg. However, despite all efforts to locate Pvt Matus, his remains were never found.
An unidentified soldier was discovered in the mid-Seventies during the construction of a barn on Kamphoefweg. Historian Wesley Johnston speculates that this may be Tec 5Robert H. Whitley, Jr., a member of the 33d Engineer Battalion, killed 5 October 1944
Het gaat hier zeer zeker om Whtiley aangezien in zijn IDPF vermeldt staat dat zijn dogtag is gevonden op het lichaam.
De Amerikaanse overheid is nog altijd betrokken bij opsporen hun vermiste onderdanen. Analisten van Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (Washington, D.C.) en The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (Hawaii) zijn circa 5 jaar geleden nog in Nederland geweest om de laatste ontwikkelingen/ontdekkingen te bespreken in de hoop dat dit tot de vondst van het lichaam van Matus zou leiden. Helaas heeft het tot nu toe nog geen resultaat opgeleverd.
